The YANA Foundation announces the launch of the book “Călimara castelului/ The Ink Castle”, on December 7, at 2 p.m., at the “Costache Sturdza” County Library in Bacău. The presentation of the book will be made by the professor and literary critic, member of the Romanian Writers’ Union and Honorary Citizen of Bacău, Petre Isachi.
The book was written by the children of the Casa YANA day center in Nicolae Bălcescu and the project was carried out with the support of the Concordia Humanitarian Organization. Over a period of three months, as part of this project, ten creative writing and drawing workshops were held at the foundation’s headquarters. 25 children wrote and illustrated a story book together with the help of the writer Mirela Bălan and the painter Mari Bucur. It was an educational game through which the child-authors learned-by-doing the value of “building together.”
The main goal of the “Călimara castelului/ The Ink Castle” project is to improve the school and social inclusion of children from disadvantaged backgrounds, through creative, personal development activities. Increasing interest in reading, improving children’s cognitive and behavioral level, diversifying the activities of the daycare center are other important targets of this project. And last but not least, we want to raise public awareness about children from disadvantaged backgrounds, highlighting their creative potential.
Many serious things in life begin like a game. This is how we started the Călimara castelului/ The Ink Castle project. In the writing and painting workshops, the children from YANA wrote and illustrated a storybook. Today we hold in our hands the book about the desires and turmoils, the joys and fears in their souls. We walked with them on inner paths and anchored them in the importance of writing and reading. Of discovering and cultivating a passion. We wanted to give them confidence in their own strength. Each child has a different tone and place in the daily flow of nature. “We want that tomorrow, the children who wrote this book to be able to use their own strength to build a better world for everyone.” (Gabriela Mateiu, director of the YANA Foundation).
